Bauska region can be called as the metropolis of Latvian cultural tourism. Here you can get acquainted with the main stages of art and architecture,starting from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Classicism to the modern farmstead. Within a radius of 10 km around Bauska you can see the most beautiful Latvian castles and manors, such as Rundāle palace and Bauska castle, Mazmežotne and Brukna manors, ancient hillforts, e.g. Mežotne hillfort. Few castles and manors also function as hotels.
The area around Bauska for a long time has been known as the Latvian “bread barn”, as the county specializes in agriculture and processing local products. Many entreprenuers offer to visit their farm or production and taste the products or see a collection of old equipments. Therefore, in the Bauska region, it is possible to taste both – wine and different types of cheese; and to see collections of the old vehicles in the recreation complex “Miķelis”, Bauska Motor Museum or at the open-air museum “Ausekļu dzirnavas”. Kaucminde School of Housekeeping has played its role in Bauska region, from which a whole generation of the most educated and best Latvian housewives, whose fame and recipes have still been preserved to this day, have grown up. Even the proximity of Lithuania has determined its peculiarities in our culinary heritage.
