A seaside breeze-inspired taste journey in Ādaži!
Ādaži Municipality is a place, where River Gauja meets the sea. River Gauja plays a significant role in the daily life of Ādaži Municipality. Its name, “Ādaži”, is derived from the old German name of the river “Aa”. Ādaži are very special with its coastal beauty and diversity. Municipalities’ 19 km long stretch of coast forms nature park “Piejūra”. Its golden sand beaches and idyllic coastal pine forests are complemented with massive parabolic dunes, unique lakes and some rivers, one of which is River Gauja. The mouth of the river Gauja is, by itself, a rarity because it is natural. Many bird species find refuge on its banks and surrounding plains. Close to River Gauja, one may also find Garezeri, a unique chain of lakes. They are scenic in any season, and, particularly at dusk, one may even find 1 or 2 bats flying over the lake. Finally, Ādaži Municipality has some of the Latvia’s cleanest lakes. This is cleanliness is appreciated by one rare flower species – the water Lobelia. It is a symbol of the municipality.
Ādaži Municipality has many interesting places. One of them is Carnikava. It is more widely known as the Lamprey Kingdom. This fishing village has been notable for many centuries for its special lamprey catching and preparation traditions. These traditions are preserved and maintained by Carnikava’s Local History Center. Nevertheless, another village called Baltezers hosts Riga Water Supply Museum, which is one of the most significant industrial heritage museums of its kind in Europe. It explains, how one of the most important arteries of Riga – the water supply system – was established and developed.
