Taste of Abava`s river curves
Abava is one of the oldest rivers in Latvia. In ancient times it was considered as holly river, people from neighbouring countries were coming to heal on the banks of Abava. The nature has created the Abava river valley as one of the spectacular landscapes in Latvia. The river flows through green forests, old towns, crosses or passes small waterfalls and fabulous caves.
The Abava valley is a habitat for many rare plant species, characteristic for western part of Latvia.
In 1999 the nature park “Abava valley” was developed. Its territory is under protection since 1957 as a habitat of rare plant and animal species in Europe.
Since the beginning of the 20th century Abava valley is called as Switzerland of Kurland. People living on the banks of Abava valley always have been creative and enthusiastic inventors. Since last century there are grown grapes, made vine, established gardens and parks, nature trails, recreation and healing places. A lot of energetic places are still accessible in the region of Abava valley.
The river Abava and its bigger influent rivers are popular for rafting and angling. Numerous walking trails, sightseeing objects and guest houses are welcoming visitors in this beautiful landscape. Visitors can enjoy landscapes, local cuisine and bright local stories.
